The Department of Data Science at MPSTME, NMIMS, is a leading academic unit within the engineering school, offering innovative programmes in the field. Established with a vision to cater to the growing demand for data-driven solutions, the department offers a wide range of educational programmes, including undergraduate (B Tech Data Science) and postgraduate (M Tech Data Science and M Tech Artificial Intelligence) degrees, as well as a doctoral programme in Engineering focused on data science and analytics. Our aim is to prepare human resources with the technical and management skills needed to meet the current and future demands of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence industry and society. The Data Science department has completed the following industry projects:

  • With Tumor Trace (UK): Students worked on image data to detect the occurrence of oral cancer.
  • Fraud detection Analytics for CoStar: around 370 Terra Bytes of data captured from companies who were involved in IP infringement were analyzed using Relativity software (based on Machine Learning) along with the AI component of NexLP.
  • Happy Bank: Customer Analytics for Microfinance
  • Doctor for You: B Tech students are working on Predictive Modelling on health-care data from rural Mumbai.

1. Akzonobel Coatings International B.V.

The Data Science department has been collaborating with AkzoNobel Coatings International B.V. for the past four years, addressing a wide array of challenges in automation, color prediction, and beyond, employing cutting-edge techniques in Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI.

Welcome to the cutting-edge computer, Big Data, and AI Labs of our Data Science Department! Our state-of-the-art facilities are meticulously equipped with advanced processors, providing an optimal computing environment for comprehensive exploration of data science and artificial intelligence. In the Big Data Lab, students actively participate in hands-on practical sessions tailored to real-world data science applications, utilizing industry-leading software tools such as Python, Anaconda, and Cloudera. Similarly, our AI Lab offers a robust platform for students to immerse themselves in the complexities of artificial intelligence, supported by top-of-the-line equipment and software resources. Each lab serves as a hub for innovation, offering unmatched opportunities for students to spearhead advancements in big data and AI technologies.




Ctrl Freaks, comprised of Harsh Mahadik, Ronit Mehta, and Mihir Shah (Btech DS, Sem VI), emerged victorious at Analytika’s Datathon, showcasing innovation in precision agriculture and image recognition. Their groundbreaking solutions promise to revolutionize farming practices and enhance the efficiency of grocery shopping, reflecting the transformative power of data science in driving positive change.
Snehee Chheda and Anish Gharat, students of BTech Data Science secured the 2nd position at the L&T Constructions organised hackathon ‘I-Cu 2023’. Employing techniques of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, their solution to generate a Smart City Layout with predefined constraints proved to be highly effective.

Abey Puthenveetil, student of MBATech Data Science got the privilege to go to Bali, Indonesia in the month of September to compete in the MIT hacking medicine hackathon internationally after winning the AI/ML track in Banglore. His skin cancer monitoring system won third place there in Bali which entitled for 500 USD and a lot of recognition globally.
ANIDYA BHANDARI, BTech DS 4th year student got selected out 27,000 applications globally for the prestigious “Mitacs Globalink Research Internship” which is a fully funded internship hosted in Canada. Anindya’s project was titled as ‘Data Analytics to Advance Municipal Wastewater Treatment’ and he worked under Dr. Amina Stoddart at the Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
