The Department of Data Science at MPSTME, NMIMS, is a leading academic unit within the engineering school, offering innovative programmes in the field. Established with a vision to cater to the growing demand for data-driven solutions, the department offers a wide range of educational programmes, including undergraduate (B Tech Data Science) and postgraduate (M Tech Data Science and M Tech Artificial Intelligence) degrees, as well as a doctoral programme in Engineering focused on data science and analytics. Our aim is to prepare human resources with the technical and management skills needed to meet the current and future demands of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence industry and society. The Data Science department has completed the following industry projects:

  • With Tumor Trace (UK): Students worked on image data to detect the occurrence of oral cancer.
  • Fraud detection Analytics for CoStar: around 370 Terra Bytes of data captured from companies who were involved in IP infringement were analyzed using Relativity software (based on Machine Learning) along with the AI component of NexLP.
  • Happy Bank: Customer Analytics for Microfinance
  • Doctor for You: B Tech students are working on Predictive Modelling on health-care data from rural Mumbai.

1. Akzonobel Coatings International B.V.

The Data Science department has been collaborating with AkzoNobel Coatings International B.V. for the past four years, addressing a wide array of challenges in automation, color prediction, and beyond, employing cutting-edge techniques in Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI.

Welcome to the cutting-edge computer, Big Data, and AI Labs of our Data Science Department! Our state-of-the-art facilities are meticulously equipped with advanced processors, providing an optimal computing environment for comprehensive exploration of data science and artificial intelligence. In the Big Data Lab, students actively participate in hands-on practical sessions tailored to real-world data science applications, utilizing industry-leading software tools such as Python, Anaconda, and Cloudera. Similarly, our AI Lab offers a robust platform for students to immerse themselves in the complexities of artificial intelligence, supported by top-of-the-line equipment and software resources. Each lab serves as a hub for innovation, offering unmatched opportunities for students to spearhead advancements in big data and AI technologies.




Ctrl Freaks, comprised of Harsh Mahadik, Ronit Mehta, and Mihir Shah (Btech DS, Sem VI), emerged victorious at Analytika’s Datathon, showcasing innovation in precision agriculture and image recognition. Their groundbreaking solutions promise to revolutionize farming practices and enhance the efficiency of grocery shopping, reflecting the transformative power of data science in driving positive change.
Snehee Chheda and Anish Gharat, students of BTech Data Science secured the 2nd position at the L&T Constructions organised hackathon ‘I-Cu 2023’. Employing techniques of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, their solution to generate a Smart City Layout with predefined constraints proved to be highly effective.

Abey Puthenveetil, student of MBATech Data Science got the privilege to go to Bali, Indonesia in the month of September to compete in the MIT hacking medicine hackathon internationally after winning the AI/ML track in Banglore. His skin cancer monitoring system won third place there in Bali which entitled for 500 USD and a lot of recognition globally.
ANIDYA BHANDARI, BTech DS 4th year student got selected out 27,000 applications globally for the prestigious “Mitacs Globalink Research Internship” which is a fully funded internship hosted in Canada. Anindya’s project was titled as ‘Data Analytics to Advance Municipal Wastewater Treatment’ and he worked under Dr. Amina Stoddart at the Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The data science department has great professors who teach the latest subjects, such as machine learning, business statistics, big data, and analytics, which helped me, become industry-ready at the time of my graduation. The 6-month internship component, which is part of the program, has helped me understand the industry requirements and upskill myself accordingly.     My data science journey at NMIMS MPSTME was a very memorable and transformative one which helped me grow holistically. The faculty is always supportive, encouraging at every step and very passionate about their subjects which positively influences the students. Focus is always on being connected to and getting the best faculty from industry to teach industry relevant stuff. The program is extremely comprehensive and thoughtfully designed which exposes a student to a variety of subjects (both required and electives) within and related to data science to enhance the overall understanding of the domain and empowers them to make informed decisions about their future. Increasing importance is being placed on practical application to improve problem solving which makes students independent and equips them to be industry ready.The department here is always looking to improve and update its course to make the experience better for its students. Regular internship opportunities are provided to students facilitated by industry-academia partnerships which is invaluable. There are department focused and general clubs, societies in the college where one can collaborate and use their skills to come up with creative ideas and solutions. The placement process is started in advance and the department brings in a variety of roles to cater to all students at major companies and innovative startups applying data science and machine learning.Overall I had an amazing experience in this program (India’s first in BTech Data Science) and I’m grateful for all the priceless connections I made here, the guidance from seniors, faculty and the excellent environment. This program is ideal for anyone who wants to step into the world of data science, machine learning and AI and make a successful career in it!

    My experience as a BTech Data Science student at MPSTME has been incredibly enriching. It provided me with ample opportunities to explore creative boundaries and devise data-driven solutions. Engaging in projects such as the AkzoNobel Capstone project and various internal initiatives exposed me to real-world industrial practices, significantly augmenting my skillset and bolstering my resume. The curriculum is regularly updated to incorporate the latest tools and technologies in Analytics, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, the commendations from esteemed faculty members, namely Sarada sir, Saba sir, and Jaykrishna sir, played a pivotal role in propelling my career forward. Thanks to their support, I have secured admission as an MSc Business Analytics student at the University of Edinburgh for the fall of ’24, a distinguished institution ranked 22nd globally.
